The Wayne High girls basketball team saw their four-game winning streak come to an end Friday as Pierce came away with a 57-51 win over the Blue Devils at High School.

The visiting Bluejays led throughout the first half, jumping out to a 15-4 lead before Allison Echtenkamp hit two free throws to get the deficit back to single digits after one period.

The Blue Devils got within a point late in the first half on a Kylie Hammer basket to make it 17-16. Pierce hit two late free throws to take a 19-16 halftime advantage.

The Blue Devils came out strong to start the second half, riding the hot hand of Hammer, who hit a 3-pointer to tie the game and followed with two more baskets to give Wayne its biggest lead at 23-19.

Pierce came back and the two teams traded the advantage for much of the third quarter. Pierce built a four-point lead, but Frankie Klausen’s 3-pointer at the end of the period made it a 38-37 game going to the final period.

Wayne kept that momentum going into the final period, starting the fourth with a 9-0 run highlighted by a 3-pointer and basket by Kelsey Boyer, two Hammer free throws and an Echtenkamp hoop to make it 46-38.

Pierce would rally, however, going on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 46-46 and took the lead for good on a 3-pointer in the closing minutes to come away with the win, dropping Wayne to 7-4 on the season.

Hammer led the way with a game-high 22 points, with Boyer adding nine, Morgan Keating putting in seven and Echtenkamp adding six. Kalusen had five and Jamie Gamble scored two.

Wayne is back in action Saturday afternoon with a home matchup against Boone Central/Newman Grove.
