The Wayne High boys basketball team gutted out a tough win in their home finale Monday, outlasting Crofton 53-51 at Wayne High School.

Jack Evetovich and Grayson McBride accounted for Wayne’s points in the opening period as they took a 10-8 advantage. Beau Bowers opened the second with a 3-pointer and McBride and Mason Lee followed with baskets to give Wayne the lead for good at 17-8. Crofton got as close as six, but Evetovich scored late to make it 26-17 at intermission.

Crofton kept things interesting, but Wayne had an answer for each challenge. Payten Gamble scored late in the third to make it 36-32 going to the fourth, and after Crofton got within two on several occasions, Wayne had an answer. Crofton’s last gasp came with under a minute to go, but Gamble came through with a key basket to make it 52-48 and Evetovich added a late free throw to put the game out of reach.

Evetvoich had 18 points and Gamble added 15 to go with three assists and four steals. McBride had six points and seven rebounds, Will Anderson added six, Lee had five points and five rebounds and Beau Bowers scored three.

The 16-7 Blue Devils close the regular season Friday at Pierce.
