Blue Devils give up one run late, fall to Tuesday elimination

Round two of the 2025 NSAA Class C State Baseball Championships moved into Monday on a rolling schedule with all four games getting in before the storms.

From Tal Anderson Field in Omaha, #6 Wayne battled two-time defending Class C champion #2 Malcolm in the night cap (about an hour and 10 minutes ahead of schedule).

The Clippers posted a go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth to hold onto the 2-1 victory. Malcolm has now won eight straight improving to 26-2 on the season while Wayne High had their five game winning streak snapped falling to 19-10.

Following back-to-back scoreless innings to start the game, Wayne High struck first thanks to a single run in the top of the third. Senior Gavin Redden drove in junior Parker Patefield to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.

The Clippers quickly answered with a single run of their own a half of an inning later.

Following two more scoreless innings, Malcolm scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.

Final favored Malcolm winning 2-1 while outhitting the Blue Devils, 4-3. Both teams committed one errors.

Entering the state tournament, Malcolm was averaging 9.9 runs per game and their pitcher had a 0.54 ERA.

Redden singled and drove in a run while Parker Patefield singled and scored for Wayne. Sophomore Chase Sturm also singled.

Sophomore Adrian Contreras (102 pitches) suffered the complete game loss in six innings allowing two earned runs off four hits while striking out one batter and walking seven.
