Blue Devils hold off Knights in five-set battle

The Wayne High volleyball team went the distance with Norfolk Catholic and came away with a five-set win in their home opener Tuesday, outlasting the Lady Knights 25-13, 15-25, 25-14, 20-25, 15-10.

The Blue Devils came out strong in the opening set and finished off the Knights in short order, but came out sluggish in the second set as the visitors tied things up at one set apiece.

Wayne again dominated their guests in the third set, but couldn’t finish them off in the fourth set and had to take control late in the fifth, scoring six of the last eight points to come away with the win.

Freshman Lauren Pick had a big night for the 7-6 Blue Devils. She had a career-high 16 kills and hit .317 for the contest. She also added three ace serves and three blocks, sharing team honors with Ashton Boyer and Shania Anderson, respectively.

Emily Armstrong added nine kills, Anderson had eight and Kylie Hammer put down seven in the win. Allyson Avery had 16 assists and Erin O’Reilly added 15. On defense, Armstrong had two blocks. Korinna Niemann had a team-high 21 digs, while Armstrong added 17, Hammer had 10 and Boyer had seven.

Wayne returns to action Saturday at the Wisner-Pilger Invitational, with action beginning at 10 a.m.
