Blue Devils pick up pair of softball wins

The Wayne High softball team put big numbers up on the scoreboard Thursday at the Summer Sports Complex, shutting out Logan View/Scribner-Snyder (12-0) and outscoring Guardian Angels Central Catholic (11-6).

In the first game, Annie Kniesche and Sidney Biggerstaff both hit two-run homers to highlight an eight-hit effort by the home team. Kniesche had two hits and four RBI’s while scoring twice. Abby Ankeny added a double.

Tori Kniesche threw a one-hit shutout, striking out 10 and walking one in the win.

In the nightcap, Wayne was down 4-1 after the Bluejays scored four in the top of the fourth, but Wayne answered with four more in the bottom of the inning, then scored three in the fifth and three in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Jenna Trenhaile’s double highlighted the four-run fourth inning. Josie Thompson had a two-run single in the fifth inning, and Biggerstaff hit an inside-the-park three-run homer in the sixth.

Trenhaile and Tori Kniesche each had two hits to highlight a nine-hit attack. Trenhaile, Annie Kniesche and Biggerstaff each scored two runs.

Kniesche threw another complete-game win, striking out 10 while allowing three hits and six walks.

The 24-3 Blue Devils are the top seed for the Mid State Conference tournament Saturday in O’Neill. They play at 10:45 a.m. in the five-team tournament.
