Blue Devils secure trio of run-rule victories, crowned Wayne softball tournament champion

A trio of games were held for each of the eight teams competing in the Wayne Softball Tournament on Saturday.

From the Wayne Softball Complex, Class B Wayne hosted seven other Class C programs.

The Blue Devils opened the first round with a 9-0 win in five innings over Ord, followed by an 8-3 win against Arlington and closed with a 13-6 victory during the championship game over Twin River all in five innings.

Wayne High softball is now 3-1 on the season.

Rylin Hall finished with a team-high .667 batting average recording a team high four hits (double/homerun) and six runs scored along with four RBI while Nyla Bolles tallied a team-high five RBI.

Sammi Gubbels (164 pitches) worked eight and two-thirds innings earning two wins allowing nine runs (three earned) off 13 hits while striking out 11 batters, walking two and hitting one. Jordyn Gamble (86) pitched six innings earning one win allowing just four hits while striking out eight batters, walking one and hitting one.

In the opening game, Wayne poured in eight runs during the home half of the first inning. Following back-to-back scoreless innings, Wayne scored once more in the fourth to win 9-0. Wayne outhit Ord, 4-3 and had one error compared to two errors by the Chanticleers.

Nyla Bolles singled, drove in two runs and scored twice while Lily Gubbels singled and drove in a run.

Kinnley McGuire and Lilly Johnson both singled and scored; Sammi Gubbels accounted for two RBI; Reagan McGuire and Jordyn Gamble both added a RBI and run scored as Courtney Roeber, Rylin Hall and Kassidee Holz all scored.

Jordyn Gamble (69 pitches) picked up the complete game victory in five innings allowing three hits while striking out seven batters and walking one.

During the second outing, Wayne High began with a three-run second inning followed by two more runs in the third. Arlington answered with a run in the fourth before Wayne outscored the Eagles, 3-2 in the fifth. Final favored Wayne High winning 8-3 despite being outhit, 5-3. Wayne had two errors compared to four errors by Arlington.

Sammi Gubbels singled, doubled and drove in a run while Nyla Bolles doubled and drove in two runs.

Rylin Hall scored three runs as Reagan McGuire, Kinnley McGuire and Jordyn Gamble all scored.

Sammi Gubbels (89 pitches) picked up the complete game victory in five innings allowing three runs off five hits while striking out six batters and walking two.

From the championship game, Twin River took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Wayne answered with an eight-run second and four more runs in the top of the third to lead 12-2. Twin River also scored four runs in the third to cut into the deficit at 12-6. The Blue Devils scored once more in the fourth to win 13-6 in five innings. WHS outhit Twin River, 13-9 and had one error compared to five from Twin River.

Rylin Hall recorded a two-run homerun, singled twice and doubled, drove in four total runs and scored twice; Nyla Bolles tripled and drove in a run; Courtney Roeber singled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice; Lillian Johnson singled twice, drove in a run and scored three runs as Lily Gubbels doubled.

Reagan McGuire singled twice and scored; Kinnley McGuire singled, drove in a run and scored as Jordyn Gamble scored.

Sammi Gubbels (75 pitches) picked up the win in three and two-thirds allowing six runs (three earned) off eight hits while striking out five batters and hitting one. Gamble (17) worked an inning allowing one hit while striking out and hitting one batter each.

The Wayne High softball team was to host O’Neill on Tuesday.
