Blue Devils storm back for 59-51 win

The Wayne High boys basketball team dug themselves out of a 20-point hole and came away with a 59-51 win over Norfolk Catholic in action Thursday at Wayne High School.

The Knights came out on fire and built a 24-9 first quarter lead to start the game. They led by as many as 20 and still held a 38-20 lead in the third quarter when Wayne rallied, outscoring the Knights 39-13 the rest of the way to claim the win.

The Blue Devils cut the lead to three at the end of the third period on a 3-pointer by Kallan Herman, then took a 46-45 lead early in the fourth on a basket by Marcus Fertig.

Norfolk Catholic regained the lead momentarily on a 3-pointer by Jamison Svehla, but Tyrus Eischeid put back a missed shot to give Wayne the lead for good as Wayne closed with an 11-2 run to earn the win and improve to 6-4 on the season.

Eischeid and Shea Sweetland both had 19 points to led the Blue Devils. Cody Rogers added nine points, Trevor DeBoer scored six off the bench, Herman had three, Fertig scored two and Josh Lutt added a free throw.

Wayne is back in action Saturday at home, facing Boone Central/Newman Grove in a girls-boys doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
