Wayne High’s hopes for a 3-0 start on the baseball diamond were thwarted Friday as Wahoo/Bishop Neumann/Cedar Bluffs handed the Blue Devils a 7-0 defeat in action at Wahoo.
Wahoo broke the ice with a run in the third and Wayne had a chance to answer in the fourth as Zane Jackson and Gunnar Jorgensen both singled before Wahoo turned a double play to end the threat.
Traling 4-0 in the sixth, Wayne put together its best scoring threat. Jackson and Hagan Miller both singled and Jorgensen walked to load the bases with two outs, but Wahoo got out of the inning unscathed and added three more runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach.
Jackson was 3-for-3 to lead Wayne’s seven hit attack, with Miller, Jorgensen, Reid Korth and Kaleb Anderson adding singles.
Trevor DeBoer pitched 4 2/3 innings to take the loss for the 2-1 Blue Devils. Tyler Gilliland and Drew Buck pitched in relief.
Wayne hosts Douglas County West in a 4:30 p.m. game Tuesday at Hank Overin Field.
