Blue Devils take third in Seward Tournament

Wayne High joined three other Nebraska High School baseball teams during a four-team tourney over the weekend.

From Seward, the Class C Blue Devils first opened against Class B Concordia/Brownell Talbot/Omaha Christian Academy while host Seward (Class B) competed against Class A Omaha South on Saturday.

Wayne High suffered a 13-6 loss to the Mustangs before earning a third place finish by winning 5-1 over the Omaha South Packers. WHS is now 14-8 on the season while Omaha South fell to 11-10.

Seward won their home tournament by first defeating Omaha South (3-2) and edged Concordia/Brownell Talbot/Omaha Christian Academy (1-0) to improve to 12-6. The Mustangs moved to 8-6.

In the Wayne loss to Concordia, the Mustangs began by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.

Wayne quickly answered with a four-run home half of the first inning. Sophomore Adrian Contreras first scored on a wild pitch, sophomore Chase Sturm followed with a RBI base hit bringing in senior Gavin Redden, junior Parker Patefield added a RBI bases loaded walk scoring senior Alex Rodriguez as junior Brodey Munter also used a RBI bases loaded walk plating Sturm.

Concordia began a rally by plating one run in the top of the second, two runs in the third and three additional runs in the top of the fourth to lead 8-4.

The Blue Devils scored one run in the home half of the fifth thanks to a RBI bases loaded walk to Contreras scoring senior Calvin Ankeny.

Concordia then added two more runs in the top of the sixth and three runs in the top of the seventh to go up 13-5.

WHS was held to one run in the home half of the seventh. Contreras recorded a RBI groundout scoring Parker Patefield.

Final favored Concordia/Brownell Talbot/Omaha Christian Academy winning 13-6 while outhitting Wayne, 11-9. The Blue Devils committed four errors compared to zero errors by the Mustangs.

Calvin Ankeny singled, doubled and scored; Adrian Contreras doubled, drove in two runs and scored; Parker Patefield doubled, drove in a run and scored as Chase Sturm singled twice, drove in a run and scored.

Brodey Munter singled and drove in a run; junior Drew Reinhardt and sophomore Jaxson Kneifl both singled as Gavin Redden and Alex Rodriguez each scored.

Contreras (64 pitches) suffered the loss in two innings allowing five runs (four earned) off three hits while striking out two batters and walking six. Junior Gavin Anderson (92) worked four innings allowing six runs (one earned) off five hits while striking out four batters and walking six. Senior Brayden Rajaee-Hallgren (26) closed out the final inning allowing two earned runs off three hits while striking out one batter and walking two.

During the win over Omaha South, Wayne began with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Gavin Redden produced a sac-fly RBI scoring Reinhardt.

The Blue Devils added a single run in the second. Munter posted a RBI double driving in Ankeny.

Following a scoreless third, WHS tallied one run in the fourth thanks to Ankeny crossing the plate on a wild pitch.

Wayne High again plated a single run in the fifth. Ankeny reached on an error allowing Redden to score.

The Blue Devils would close out scoring with a run in the home half of the sixth to go up 5-0. Contreras recorded a RBI double plating Munter.

Omaha South scored their lone run of the game in the top of the seventh.

Final favored Wayne High winning 5-1 while outhitting the Packers, 8-5. Both teams recorded one error.

Calvin Ankeny singled twice and scored twice; Brodey Munter singled twice, drove in a run and scored as Jaxson Kneifl singled twice.

Gavin Redden singled, drove in a run and scored; Adrian Contreras singled and drove in a run as Drew Reinhardt scored.

Redden (66 pitches) picked up the complete game victory in seven innings allowing one run off five hits while striking out five batters.
