Wayne came from behind to upset No. 7 Bishop Neumann 14-10 in their regular-season finale Friday in Wahoo.
With the win, Wayne (7-2) wraps up a spot in the Class C-1 playoffs that start next week. Going into Friday’s game, Wayne was at No. 11 in the playoff point standings, and Friday’s win could move them up into a potential first-round home game, pending the outcomes of other games on the schedule Friday.
In other area action, Allen had already wrapped up a playoff bid last weekend and could have secured a first-round home game, but dropped a 12-6 decision to a Wynot team that needed a win to get in the playoffs. With the loss, the 6-2 Eagles are now looking at a probable road game for the first round.
On Thursday, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge handled Elkhorn Valley 60-22 to secure a spot in the playoffs. At 5-3, the Bears’ hopes for a home game rest on how the 32-team field is split geographically when the field is announced by the NSAA on Saturday.
Wakefield, which is ineligible for the D-1 playoffs because of its enrollment numbers, ended their regular season Friday with a 62-26 win at Wisner-Pilger, finishing their season at 7-1 on the year. Their only loss of the year was a 32-30 loss to Howells-Dodge, who is the top team in the Class D-1 power point standings.
Wakefield, which is ineligble for the playoffs, closed an 8-1 season with a dominating 62-26 win over Wisner-Pilger.
Playoff brackets for all seven Nebraska high school classes will be announced by the NSAA on Saturday.
