Blue Devils use extras during road victory

Following a home triangular, the Wayne High softball team took to the road for a weeknight outing.

From Columbus, the Blue Devils visited Columbus Lakeview on Tuesday.

In the eighth, Wayne scored twice to hold onto the 3-2 victory over the Viqueens. The Blue Devils have now won three straight to improve to 7-2 while Columbus Lakeview fell to 4-5.

The two runs in extras came off a fielder's choice error at the plate and a RBI ground out.

Neither team scored in the opening three innings until Lakeview plated a run in the home half of the fourth. Following a scoreless fifth, Wayne tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth. In extras, Wayne took the lead thanks to a two-run top of the eighth and held Lakeview to one run in the bottom of the eighth. Final favored Wayne High winning 3-2 despite being outhit, 6-2. Wayne committed three errors compared to one error by the Viqueens.

Nyla Bolles singled, drove in a run and scored while Kinnley McGuire singled and scored.

Reagan McGuire and Sammi Gubbels both accounted for a RBI as Jordyn Gamble scored.

Mackenzie Nissen (107 pitches) picked up the complete game victory in eight innings allowing two runs (one earned) off six hits while striking out nine batters and walking one.

The Wayne High varsity softball team will next compete in the Mercy Monarchs Invite in Ralston on Saturday, Sept. 14. WHS will open bracket B against North Bend Central at 9 a.m. followed by a game against Yutan at 11 a.m. Teams on the other side of the bracket include Bishop Neumann, Platteview and the host Mercy.

The first place, second place and third place teams will play one more game Saturday afternoon during the Mercy Monarchs Invite.
