After two emotionally-charged wins, the Wayne High football team struggled for a half against Arlington before pulling away for a 30-12 win to move to 3-0 for the first time in 12 seasons.
The Blue Devil offense was held in check until the final seconds of the first half when Beau Bowers snuck over on a short touchdown run to give Wayne a 7-0 halftime advantage.
The Eagles did their best to contain Mason Lee after his big game last week by double-teaming the senior receiver, but that left teammate Ryan Jaixen with single-man coverage and Bowers found him on a 73-yard touchdown pass on the first drive of the second half to make it a 14-0 game.
Arlington scored to make it 14-6, but Wayne came right back with another touchdown drive, this time with Lee doing the honors on a pass from Bowers to make it 21-6.
Juan Vergara hit a field goal before Arlington scored again midway through the fourth to keep things interesting, but Brennen O'Reilly busted through on a 15-yard run in the closing minutes to seal the Blue Devils' third win in as many tries this season.
Wayne will look for their first 4-0 start since 2002 next week when they travel to visit 0-3 David City, who is coming off a 34-7 loss to Milford/Dorchester. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. in David CIty.
