Blue Devils win home tournament

The Wayne High softball team posted three wins and capped the day with a 13-2 win over Highway 91 to take the title at the Wayne Softball Invitational on Saturday at the Summer Sports Complex.
The Blue Devils opened with a 5-2 win over Twin River, breaking a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth inning. Sydney Biggerstaff lashed a two-out double to score Kiara Hochstein and Jenna Trenhaile to break the tie, and she came home on a Jamie Gamble single to add the final run of the game. Trenhaile had three hits and Gamble added two in the win. Ashten Gibson got the win in relief.
In the semifinals, Wayne pitchers Tori Kniesche and Hannah Belt combined on a no-hitter as the hosts dominated Ord 15-0. Wayne scored 11 runs in the first inning and had 14 hits in the contest, with Trenhaile, Biggerstaff, Gamble, Kennedy Maly and Kortney Keller each getting two hits.
In the championship game, Wayne broke open the game with seven runs in the seventh inning to post a 13-2 win over Highway 91. Annie Kniesche and Abby Ankeny both hit home runs to highlight the big seventh inning, and Kniesche had three hits, including a pair of home runs, to highlight Wayne’s 13-hit attack. Ankeny and Kniesche each finished with three RBI’s, Hochstein and Biggerstaff each had two hits, and Gibson drove in two runs for the 3-1 Blue Devils. Gibson threw five hitless innings and struck out 10 to get the win. Belt threw two innings of relief.
