the Wayne High girls golf team began their season in dominant fashion.

From the O’Neill Golf Club, Wayne High joined 10 other varsity teams during Thursday’s O’Neill Invite.

After being tied with West Holt at 199 each through nine holes in team scoring, the Blue Devil girls shot a 377 overall to win the O’Neill Invite by nearly 30 strokes.

Head coach Josh Johnson for Wayne High girls golf said, “today (Thursday) was a great test for us. We’d never played the course before, wind was blowing and we were a little rusty, and it showed on the front. Instead of backing down the girls gutted it out on the back and played really well. I am really proud of how they battled and shot a great back nine. We learned a lot today about ourselves and will look to build on that moving forward.”

Individually, Wayne High was led by invite champion Joslyn Johnson with an 83 (43/40) out of the 61 golfers who submitted a score. Carli Canham (92) and Charli Sievers (94) took fifth and sixth respectively.

Other Wayne results came from Lindsay Niemann (T-17th – 108) and Hallie Heithold (T-29th – 117). Wayne JV was led by Rylynn Owen with a 132 (T-48th).

Following Wayne’s 377, West Holt came in second with a 405, Battle Creek took third (414), the host O’Neill placed fourth (424) as Valentine rounded out the top five teams with a 437. Pierce placed sixth with a 448.

Daleni Knust from West Holt finished runner-up with an 85.

The Wayne High girls golf team competed in a scheduled road triangular (nine holes) hosted by Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on Tuesday. Cedar Catholic (Hartington) will be the third team.

Wayne High will also host their first of two regular season invites on Friday, Aug. 30 starting at 9 a.m. from the Wayne Country Club.
