Blue Devils win twice on home court

After playing single games the past two nights, the Wayne girls and boys basketball teams went back to work during a home doubleheader on Saturday.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium, the Blue Devils hosted another Mid State Conference regular season opponent being Boone Central.

The Wayne girls won 34-25 while the Blue Devil boys secured a 74-39 victory against the visiting Cardinals.

In the girls game, Boone Central held a 7-6 lead after the first quarter which was followed by Wayne answering with an 11-6 second to lead 17-13 at the break. The Cardinals chipped away at the deficit with a 7-5 third quarter as the Blue Devils won the fourth, 12-5. Final favored Wayne High winning 34-25 to improve to 7-7 as the Cardinals fell to 5-6 dropping their third straight.

Wayne was led by sophomore Addison Frank with 14 points as junior Haley Kramer followed with 13 points.

Other scoring came from junior Elle Powicki with three points as two-point scoring came from junior Claire Lutter (11 rebounds) and sophomore Alexis Legler.

During the boys outing, Wayne led 10-7 following the opening quarter before extending their lead thanks to an 18-12 second quarter to go up 28-19 at the break. The Blue Devils outscored Boone Central, 20-13 in the third and 26-7 in the fourth. Final favored Wayne 74-39 winning their third straight to improve to 12-1 as the Cardinals fell to 5-6.

 

Wayne double figure leaders were senior Colson Nelson with 26 points thanks to eight made three’s, junior Jace Jorgensen recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds as sophomore Jaxson Kneifl added 11 points on three made three’s and dished out seven assists.

Other scoring came from senior Gavin Redden with nine points, senior Kaden Keller tallied four points, three-point scoring came from senior Brayden Rajaee-Hallgren and sophomore Chase Nelson as junior Drew Miller and senior Nacho Diaz both scored two points.

The Blue Devils made 12 three’s and went 12-15 from the charity stripe.
