A second road NSIC contest took over the Wayne State College football schedule Saturday afternoon.
From Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium at Maxell Field in Winona, Minnesota, the Wildcats were in search of snapping a six-game road losing streak to Winona State University.
Passing scores came at a premium for both teams as Wayne State College was able to hold onto the 28-21 victory. WSC is now 3-1 (2-1 NSIC) while the Warriors fell to 1-2 (1-1 NSIC).
It marked the first Wildcat road win at Winona State University since 2009.
Wayne State College scored on their opening drive of the game with a 14 play, 77-yard drive (7:27 off the clock) ending with a 26-yard passing touchdown from senior Nick Bohn to sophomore running back Latravious Boyd.
WSC led 7-0 after the first quarter.
Winona State University answered with seven minutes to play in the first half off a 40-yard passing touchdown from senior Cole Strenstrom to redshirt sophomore wide out Cayden Holcomb. Following the extra-point, the game was tied at 7-7.
The Wildcats then posted a 20-yard score between Bohn and redshirt sophomore wide receiver Kendrick Watkins-Hogue with 4:22 left in the second quarter.
At the break, Wayne State College led 14-7.
WSC then began the third quarter with a 33-yard score from Bohn and redshirt freshman Keaton Bonderson with 10:20 left in the third quarter. The Wildcats led at-most 21-7.
Winona State University would score twice in the fourth. Stenstrom connected with Holcomb a second time (11:09 remaining) with a 38-yard score before Stenstrom found redshirt sophomore tight end James Durst (5:48) on a 15-yard score. The game was tied at 21-21.
Wayne State College then scored the go-ahead touchdown as Bohn found Watkins-Hogue a second time (3:43) on a 52-yard completion.
Wayne State College held onto a 28-21 victory.
Bohn was 17-30 for 208 yards with four passing touchdowns but was sacked four times.
Watkins Hogue finished with seven catches for 103 yards and two scores. Bonderson added two catches for 37 yards and a touchdown, senior Ashten Schmaderer had three catches for 22 yards as Boyd recorded a 26-yard receiving touchdown.
Freshman Akeem Knox led the rushing attack with 11 catches for 32 yards. Boyd and junior running back Dawson Forgy both left the game due to injury.
Senior linebacker Dexter Larsen led WSC with eight tackles (two solo) as fellow senior linebacker Alex Kowalczyk added seven tackles (four solo).
Sophomore defensive lineman Carter Sitzman (five tackles/four solo) and redshirt freshman defensive lineman Jackson Bos (three tackles/one solo) both recorded two tackles for loss, a sack and forced a fumble. Senior Alex Schall recovered a fumble and sophomore defensive back Brayden Chaney recorded an interceptions. Junior defensive lineman Drake Peed blocked a field goal.
Freshman Brady McGill was 4-4 on extra points entering for the injured sophomore placekicker Boston Hensley.
The Wayne State College football team will have a bye week on Sept. 28 and next prepare for homecoming on Saturday, October 5 against Minot State University at 1 p.m.
