Ahead of the three-day NSIC Women’s Golf Championships, a Wayne State College senior standout was recognized for top honors in the classroom.
According to a release from Wayne State Athletics, Abbigail Brodersen has earned the NSIC Elite 18 Award as the top scholar athlete holding the highest grade point average of the 12 member schools. She was presented with the award Thursday evening during the pre-championship meeting and is the first ever Wildcat women’s golfer to earn NSIC Elite 18 honors.
The 54-hole NSIC Women’s Golf Championships will take place in Smithville, Missouri at Paradise Pointe Golf Complex Friday, April 25 – Sunday, April 27. The top five individual finishers will be named to the All-Tournament team.
A native of Albion and a graduate of Boone Central HS, Brodersen is a senior and holds a 4.00 grade point average while majoring in industrial technology/ drafting and design/ construction management. She holds a 79.6 stroke average over 20 rounds with a low round of 72 (+2) at the Vegas Warrior Invitational (March 14-15) this season. She had four top-five finishes this season with nine rounds in the 70’s and helped the Wildcats win three tournament titles.
Brodersen is a four-year starter for the Wildcats and was named All-NSIC Second Team as a sophomore in 2023. In the classroom she is a two-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team selection, three-time NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence selection and Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team honoree.
As part of the NSIC 25th Anniversary celebration during the 2016-17 academic year, the NSIC Elite 18 Award was instituted to recognize the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the NSIC Championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The NSIC Elite 18 award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NSIC’s 18 Championships.
