A Wayne State College graduate, Berkly Brummond now teaches social sciences at Wayne High School.

“I’m excited to be here,” Brummond said. “When the U.S. history job popped open here, I was like, ‘I want that job,’ because U.S. history is probably my favorite thing to teach.”

Originally from Norfolk, Brummond said his mother and grandfather were teachers too, so he grew up thinking teaching was cool and decided to go into it because of them.

“I originally was not planning on staying in Wayne, but then I started working in the school system and I liked it,” Brummond said. “The kids are really good here. I liked all the staff that was here. I could see myself here.”

Brummond said being a paraprofessional for the last couple of years helped him to build connections with his students and their parents.

“I've helped out with sports and subbed, and I just feel like I've made the connections before I became the teacher,” Brummond said. “I knew most of my students. I knew who they were, what kind of activities they did and what kind of people they were, you know? So it was pretty easy to jump in this first year because I already made those connections.”

Outside of the classroom, Brummond said he loves to golf.

“If my kids are going to see me anywhere outside the classroom in Wayne, I'm going to be at the golf course,” Brummond said.

He said he also likes to go to his students’ sporting events.

“I think the main thing is just being involved in their activities outside of school,” Brummond said. “If you're there to support them for that, it makes your connection better.”

Looking forward, Brummond said he is excited to get to know his students a little more and to continue to get better at teaching every year.
