High school basketball for Wayne and Wakefield took place over the weekend; Wayne bowling traveled back to Norfolk for the Boone Central Invite; Wayne High girls wrestling was joined by Tri County Northeast (girls and boys) as well as Winside (girls and boys) for a road invite; Wayne boys wrestling team was also on the road; both Wakefield and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys wrestling competed in a weekend invite; the LCC girls wrestlers were in action as Wayne State College completed a series of three straight on the road.
From the Wayne Jr/Sr gymnasium, the Blue Devil girls basketball team got back on the winning track with a 44-33 decision while the Wayne boys snapped a two-game losing streak thanks to a 43-37 victory over Lakeview.
Wayne High girls (3-1) and boys (2-2) will next visit West Point-Beemer on Dec. 19 (6/7:30 p.m.).
From King's Lanes in Norfolk, the Wayne High girls and boys bowling program competed in the Boone Central Invite. Results were still being finalized Saturday evening.
The Wayne High bowling team will next travel to Columbus to visit Lakeview on Dec. 16 for a road dual at 10 a.m.
From North Bend, the Wayne girls wrestlers captured gold at the NBC Invite scoring 154.5 points among 16 teams in action while the Blue Devil boys totaled 64 points to place eighth at the Holdrege Duster Invite.
Top Blue Devil medalists in girls action were individual champions of Nyla Bolles (140) and Anna Naeve (145) while Reagan McManigal (125), Ivette Ozuna (155) and Alexandria Ziska (170) all followed in second.
Hadley Woehler (115), Ayvree Abler (120), Megan Magnuson (135) and Jasmine Contreras (235) all placed fourth.
The Wayne boys were led by Grant Maas (157) with a gold medal, Grady Maas (106) followed in runner-up as Ethan Gregory (126) took fourth.
The Wayne wrestlers will next be in action on Dec. 19 for the girls (Elgin Public/Pope John) and boys (Blair).
Also in North Bend, the Tri County Northeast girls finished seventh (59) while the Winside girls took 15th (7 pts).
Top performers for the Allen/Emerson-Hubbard co-op were posted by Andrea Bacilio (100) and Kiya Tornez (155) both winning their weight class while Jenni Olson (105) finished third.
Winside had two wrestlers in action being led by Raylyn Behmer (120) scoring all seven team points going 2-2 along with a bye.
The Winside boys placed 15th (35.5) while the TCNE boys finished 17th (26) out of 18 teams.
The lone medalist for Tri County Northeast came from Nate Franzluebbers (285) finishing fourth.
The lone varsity medal for Winside was posted by Stratton Sellin (165) finishing fourth. In JV action, Roman Hernandez (132 B) finished third as Carson Planer (132 A) took fourth.
The Tri County Northeast wrestlers will next travel to the Ponca Quad on Dec. 18 starting at 5 p.m.
The Winside wrestlers are back on the mat on Dec. 16 visiting Oakland-Craig for a dual starting at 7 p.m. (girls and boys).
From the Stanton wrestling invite, the Wakefield boys finished eighth (57.5) while the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys took 15th (9 pts) among the 17 teams.
Wakefield medalists were led by Baldwin Garcia (106) who won his weight class while Ruben Vega (165) followed in second as Israel Garcia (126) finished fifth.
The lone LCC medalist came from Jake Lipp (190) scoring all nine team points placing sixth.
The Wakefield boys will next travel to Wisner-Pilger on Dec. 20 at 10 a.m.
LCC will next send their boys to the Osmond Invite on Dec. 20 at 9:30 a.m.
From Tilden during the Elkhorn Valley girls invite, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge rounded out the 10-team field scoring 12 points.
Tae Settje (120) placed third while Grace Galvin (140) finished sixth.
The LCC girls are next scheduled to compete in the Elgin Public/Pope John Invite on Dec. 19 at 3 p.m.
From Wisner, the Wakefield girls basketball team lost 64-21 while the Trojan boys secured an 81-31 victory at Wisner-Pilger.
Wakefield girls (0-5) and boys (3-2) will next host Bloomfield on Dec. 16 at 5:15/6:45 p.m.
From St. Cloud, MN, the Wayne State College men lost 93-69 while the Wildcat women fell 78-55 at St. Cloud State.
WSC men (5-6/1-4 NSIC) and women (6-5/1-4 NSIC) will next host Concordia-St. Paul on Dec. 18 at 5:30/7:30 p.m.
