Spring is here, flowers are blooming, and outdoor activities are back in full swing. Unfortunately, warmer weather also brings mosquitoes, ticks, spiders, snakes, and stinging insects. Your Poison Center shares these tips to help prevent and treat common bites and stings.
Mosquitoes & Ticks
• Mosquitoes and ticks can carry diseases in addition to causing itchy bites.
• Only apply repellents labeled for skin use and avoid over-applying.
• Wash bites with soap and water. Antihistamine cream may help relieve itching.
Bee, Wasp & Hornet Stings
• Remove honeybee stingers by scraping with a flat object such as an ID card. Avoid pinching the stinger, as this may inject more venom.
• Call 911 immediately if there is difficulty breathing or swallowing, throat or chest tightness, or a history of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).
Spider Bites
• Most spiders bite only when disturbed or provoked.
When to Follow Up with a Doctor
• A red ring or “bullseye” rash around the bite
•Illness such as fever, muscle/joint pain, or rash within 30 days of a tick bite.
