Commissioners approve flooring, plan to fill vacancies

Two positions within Wayne County are closer to finding a replacement, a flooring contractor was approved for the main level of the courthouse and more during the regularly scheduled Wayne County Board of Commissioners meeting held May 5.

Kevin Davis and Rod Gilliland shared fair expenditures and profits with the board which have been trending upwards but for this year they were going to be short around $20,000 for the 25 acres of land the fair board purchased from Brian Bowers in 2024 for overflow parking. Payments are $25,000 for a 10 year loan.

*An item that was missed in the 'print' version of the article was: Wayne County approved $200,000 for the Wayne County Fair Board but roughly $147,000 was allotted with roughly $53,000 the Fair Board was expecting to use, but didn't receive.

In the end, no motion was made as the Commissioners will be working on the upcoming budget in the next month.

With the flooring on the second floor completed by Jason Sears Flooring, bids for the main level were awarded to Scranton Flooring out of Norfolk with only one bid available at the time of the meeting. After the last Commissioners meeting on April 21, both businesses were notified that Wayne County wanted every office broken down.

An agenda item for the Noxious Weed board position was tabled following lengthy discussion on the transition of Doug Deck, current superintendent, who wanted to help train a new person before he resigns.

The lone applicant will bring in past experience but currently sits on the Weed Board and won't be paid while serving on the board and training.

Commissioners also approved the Maintenance/Custodian hiring committee to offer one of the two individuals who were interviewed.

A name was not shared at the time of printing but he is local and lives in Wayne which will assist in being close to help with snow removal. This would include additional duties as needed.

The next regularly scheduled Wayne County Board of Commissioners meeting will be on May 19 at 9 a.m. in the lobby of the lower level of the Wayne County Courthouse. Board members are meeting at different locations to find the spot that best fits their regular meeting needs.
