Commissioners get update from Economic Development Office

short meeting when the Wayne County Board of Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday.

Highlighting the meeting was a quarterly update on economic development activities in the county.

Luke Virgil, Director of Economic Development with Wayne America, Inc., shared information on changes within the office, including the resignations of two persons, the hiring of an Assistant Director of Housing Development and offering of the position of Marketing Director to an individual.

Virgil shared with the commissioners some of the activities the office has been involved in the past quarter. These include hosting two candidate forums and the Christmas in Wayne/Festival of Trees activities.

Business growth in the last quarter included the purchase of Tom's Auto Body by Michael and Rebecca Brudigam, Arnie's Ford under new ownership as Davis Ford, Witt's Jewelry and Galaxy Vape. In addition, several new housing developments are being planned and the city plans to undertake an electrical substation/generation project in the northeast portion of the city.

Elise Reese began her duties as the Assistant Director of Housing Development on Nov. 25 and introduced herself to the commissioners during the meeting. She shared information on the projects she is working on, including work at Meadowview Estates.

In other action, commissioners approved three resolutions at Tuesday's meeting. 

The first of these, Resolution 24-21 authorizes the County Treasurer to invest and re-invest county funds.

Resolution 24-22 designates BankFirst of Wayne, Elkhorn Valley Bank of Wayne, F&M Bank of Wayne, Wayne County Bank, a division of the Madison County Bank in Winside, State Nebraska Bank of Wayne, Nebraska Bank of Carroll, Nebraska Public Agency Investment Trust aka NPAIT and Nebraska Federal Investment Trust aka NFIT as county depositories.

The final resolution on the agenda, Resolution 24-23, transfers $1,000,000 from the County's General Fund to the County Road Fund.

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners will next meet in regular session on Tuesday,  Jan. 7 at 9 a.m. in the court room.
