Contreras drives in go-ahead run, Parker Patefield seals deal with final defensive outs

With postseason play beginning on May 8, the Wayne High baseball team closed out their regular season schedule on their home diamond against a co-op of three schools.

From Hank Overin Field in Wayne, the Blue Devils welcomed Platte Valley (Ashland-Greenwood/Yutan/Mead) on May 3.

Wayne High scored late to pick up a 3-2 win marking back-to-back wins improving to 16-9. The visiting Patriots fell to 6-16 dropping back-to-back.

Platte Valley took control early with single runs in the first and second innings to lead 2-0.

The Blue Devils quickly answered thanks to a pair of runs in the home half of the second inning to tie the game up at 2-2. Sophomore Jaxson Kneifl posted a two-RBI single driving in seniors Alex Rodriguez and Calvin Ankeny.

Following back-to-back scoreless innings, WHS scored once more in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Adrian Contreras used a RBI base hit scoring junior Drew Reinhardt.

The game ended on a double-play after junior Parker Patefield caught a fly ball in left field and gunned down the potential game-tying run at the plate to junior catcher Brodey Munter after the base runner tagged up.

Final favored Wayne winning 3-2 despite being outhit, 5-3. The Blue Devils committed three errors while Platte Valley recorded one error.

Jaxson Kneifl singled and drove in two runs; Adrian Contreras singled and drove in a run as Alex Rodriguez singled and scored.

Drew Reinhart and Calvin Ankeny both scored.

Contreras (90 pitches) picked up the win in six and a third innings allowing two runs (one earned) off five hits while striking out five batters, walking four and hitting one. Junior Gavin Anderson (two) earned the save in two-thirds walking one batter.
