After collecting enough signatures from registered voters in Wayne County Commissioner District #2, a recall election will be held to determine the fate of Commissioner Dean Burbach.
John Dunklau, a member of the committee for the recall of Burbach, told the commissioners that enough signatures had been collected to move forward with the process.
At Tuesday's meeting of the Wayne County Board of Commissioners, Dunklau spoke to the commissioners and asked Burbach if he would step down, to which Burbach said "no."
Burbach told the commissioners that there was information circulating that was not correct and "all projects (in District 2) have been completed."
The recall committee was required to gather signatures of 35% of the votes cast for Burbach in the last election for the recall to move forward. He received a total of 802 votes, which meant 281 valid signatures were necessary. There were 296 valid signatures gathered, meaning the recall could move forward.
The County Clerk's Office has worked with the Nebraska Secretary of State to determine that an election will be held Jan. 13, 2026.
This will be a mail-in only election with ballots required to be mailed out 10 to 22 days before the election.
District 2 includes an area in the north and west portion of the county, along with an area in the northwest portion of the city of Wayne.
