Wayne State’s cross country team competed in the season opening Augustana Twilight Invitational Friday in Sioux Falls, S.D., with the women finishing 22nd out of 30 teams and the men placing 22nd out of 26 teams.
In women’s action, freshman Molly McCartney was Wayne State’s top finisher, covering the 5,000-meter course in a time of 19:43 in her first-ever cross country meet. Brianna Crouch was the next Wildcat finisher in 188th place overall at 21:14. Wakefield sophomore Josephine Peitz followed in 231st place with a time of 22:07.
Other Wildcat finishers were Kim Lowman (235th, 22:10) and Sabrina Sack (268th, 23:26).
In men’s action, junior Isaias Solorio was the team’s top finisher, placing 114th overall out of a field of 280 runners on the four-mile course with a time of 21:27. He was followed by freshman Brock Hegarty in 140th place at 21:48.
Nathan Pearson came in 171st at 22:17 with Jack Doughty finishing 191st in 22:45. Other finishers were Bailey Peckham (215th, 23:28), Jesus Arellano (226th, 23:45) and Nathan Hiemer (263rd, 25:22).
Wayne State returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the UNL Woody Greeno Invitational in Lincoln.
