Delvin LeRoy Mikkelsen was born Jan. 21, 1936 in Wayne to Jens Carl and Meta Emma (Daum) Mikkelsen. He grew up on his parent’s farm outside of Wisner and graduated from Wayne High School in1953. He joined the United States Army where he served at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
After his military service, he returned to Wayne and married Mardelle Fleer, (Delvin’s gal), March 3, 1957 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wayne. Delvin was proud to say he was married to Mardelle for 68 years and never had an argument…that he won. They started a dairy farm north of Altona where they raised a family and farmed before moving to town in 2018. While on the farm he was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Altona and then Grace Lutheran Church after moving to Wayne.
Delvin enjoyed polka music, dancing, playing dominoes and cards, wood working and driving to town with his boxer dog to get ice cream at the Dairy Queen.
Delvin was a good son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor. He was proud to be a farmer, a veteran, an American and a Nebraskan.
Those grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Mardelle; daughters, Lori Van Ede (Doug) of Brandon, South Dakota, Jan Doescher (Dave) of Wayne and Karen Ellsworth (Dan) of Peyton, Colorado; granddaughter, Jordyn Sutter of Wayne, grandsons, Trent Doescher (Brittany) of Palmyra, Travis Van Ede (Sara) of Onalaska, Wisconsin, Zachary Van Ede of Saint Paul Minnesota; great-grandchildren, Bexley, Rhett and Maddox; sister, Nyla (DeVern) Wegner of Fremont; brother-in-law, Harold (Sharon) Fleer of Wayne and many nieces and nephews.
