Dendinger hits provisional mark at SMSU Invite

Junior Michaela Dendinger hit an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the shot put for a second straight week to lead the Wayne State women’s track and field team at the SMSU Mustang Open in Marshall, Minn.

Dendinger won the shot put with a mark of 51 feet, 3 1/2 inches that now ranks third-best in NCAA Div. II. She also finished second in the hammer throw (192-1) and the discus (165-7).

Shelby Roth placed in two events, taking third in the high jump (4-11) and 10th in the javelin with a top mark of 79-1. Shelby Poell also placed in two events, finishing tied for fourth in the high jump at 4-9 while taking ninth in the long jump at 17-0 1/2.

In other field events, Tia Jones took fourth in the shot put (40-11 1/2), Kacie O’Connor was fifth in the discus (146-5), Tessa Ives eighth in the hammer throw (154-1) and Kes Burke ninth at 141-10.

In track events, Melissa Kroll placed eighth in the 800-meter run (2:31.96), Mary Alderson was 10th in the 400-meter dash (1:00.44) and freshman Jamie Larsen was 10th in the 800-meter run at 2:36.38.

In men’s action, Braxton Adams took first place in the 100-meter dash and ran a leg on the first-place 400 meter relay team to lead the Wayne State men.

Adams crossed the tape first in the 100-meter dash in 10.84 seconds and joined Alvyns Alcenrod, Clay Kramper and Jordan Zautke in winning the 400-meter relay in 42.22 seconds. Kramper also recorded a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.10 seconds while Alcenrod was sixth in the 100-meter dash (11.15).

Brady Metz earned a tie for second in the triple jump (47-3) and was third in the long jump (22-5 1/4). Travis Eller was fifth in the long jump (21-2) and came in 10th in the javelin (118-9).

Kak Ayaj took third in the 800-meter run (1:58.63) with Nathan Pearson fifth at 2:00.18. Senior Nick Fly was fifth in the 1,500-meter run (4:11.30), Allen Arauz took fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.19) and Cody Kralicek was ninth at 1:01.77 while Jack Doughty was fifth in the 5,000-meter run (16:24.91). The Wildcat 1,600-meter relay team of Brandon Marker, Eller, Kralicek and Habib Jallow was third at 3:29.85.

In field events, Matthew Nemec was fifth in the hammer throw (164-8) and eighth in the discus (132-9), Derek Lahm sixth in the javelin (155-11), Jayle Hinkle ninth in the shot put (44-11 1/2) and Dylan Kaup 10th in the discus (136-5).

Wayne State will compete this Friday and Saturday at the NSIC/MIAA Challenge in Maryville, Mo.
