For the fifth consecutive week, Wayne State thrower Michaela Dendinger was named the Northern Sun Conference Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
The junior posted a pair of top-five finishes amongst strong Division I fields last weekend at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, placing second collegiately in the hammer throw with a mark of 203 feet, 5 inches. It was the sixth time in seven meets that Dendinger exceeded the NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the event. She also finished third in the shot put with a top throw of 49-9.
Dendinger has NCAA automatic qualifying marks in three events, ranking second in NCAA Division II in the shot put (52-1 3/4), second in the hammer throw (204-4) and fifth in the discus (172-10).
The Wayne State women’s team remained ranked No. 20 in this week’s U.S. Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Div. II Women’s Outdoor Track and Field National Team Computer Rankings.
Wayne State received a total of 55.10 points in the national rankings based on performers who have achieved NCAA automatic and/or provisional qualifying marks during the regular season. The Wildcats are one of three teams from the NSIC listed in the Top 25, with Minnesota Duluth eighth and Minnesota State 18th.
Wayne State will compete Friday and Saturday at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls, S.D.
