Dendinger sets season mark in shot put at Doane Invite

Wayne State senior thrower Michaela Dendinger hit an NCAA automatic mark in the shot put and Cade Kalkowski tossed a provisional mark to highlight Wayne State’s effort at the Jim Dutcher Memorial track meet Sunday at Doane College in Crete.

Dendinger won two events, winning the shot put and discus and placing second in the hammer throw to lead the Wildcat women’s effort. She took over the top throw in the shot put in NCAA Div. II with a season-best mark of 54 feet, 2 1/2 inches to win the event. She also placed first in the discus with a top effort of 165-1 and was second in the hammer throw with another mark over 200 feet, this time producing a throw of 201-3.

Freshman Allysa Kimpson recorded a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (12.72) and 200-meter dash (26.09) while Kim Lowman collected a fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:05.93.

Freshman Sophie Noecker took fifth in the long jump at 17-5 1/4 while fellow freshman Molly McCartney crossed the line sixth in the 1,500-meter run at 5:09.37. 

In field events, senior Kacie O’Connor took fourth in the discus at 142-0 with Kenzie Sullivan seventh at 137-8. Freshman Jadin Wagner took fifth in the shot put (45-4 1/4) with Tia Jones 10th at 42-8 3/4.

In men’s action, Wayne State had three second-place finishes. Clay Kramper was second in the 200-meter dash in 21.87 seconds, Jack Doughty took second in the 10,000-meter run at 34:14.82 and senior Brady Metz was second in the triple jump at 47’-1.

Kalkowski had an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the hammer throw as the redshirt freshman took third at 185-7. Teammates Dylan Kaup placed fifth at 173-3, Matthew Nemec sixth at 170-10 and Cole Christoffersen 10th at 163-1. Jayle Hinkle was ninth in the shot put at 46-8 with Preston Davis taking ninth in the javelin at 145-4.

Other top finishes for the Wildcats included Brock Hegarty taking seventh in the 1,500-meter run (4:13.89), Isaias Solorio was fifth in the 10,000-meter run at 34:40.93 and Metz placed 10th in the long jump at 21-9 1/2.

Wayne State is scheduled to compete Tuesday at the South Dakota Invite in Vermillion, S.D., and Wednesday at the Mount Marty Twilight Meet in Yankton, S.D.
