The Wayne Dirt Devils won five in a row and took home the tournament title at the Wahoo Invitational over the weekend.
Wayne opened play Saturday with a 7-4 win over Calvary Brabec.
Alexis Legler hit a solo homer as part of a two-hit, two-run effort to lead the charge for the Devils. Kinnley McGuire doubled and scored a run, Lillian Johnson scored twice and Lily Gubbels and Anna Dutcher added hits. McGuire struck out six to get the pitching win.
In the second game, Wayne outscored the Lincoln Rockets in a 14-8 decision.
Wayne used an eight-run second inning to propel their win over the Rockets. Kaylei McIntosh had a double and three RBIs, Sidney Nelson had two hits and Dutcher and Nelson both scored twice to help McGuire get her second win of the day.
In their final game Saturday, Wayne handled the Nebraska Quakes 13-5.
A nine-run first inning sent the locals on to the easy win, with McGuire recording three hits, scoring twice and driving in two more to lead the offense. Legler, Johnson and Gubbels also scored twice and McGuire won her third game of the day.
In Sunday’s semifinal, Wayne pounded the Stampede 14-4.
Wayne trailed early, but scored seven in the second and seven more in the third to move on to the championship.
Legler had two doubles, drove in two and scored two for the winners. McGuire and McIntosh both drove in a pair and Dutcher, Nelson, Kamden Dobbins and Kassidee Holz each scored two runs. McGuire threw the complete-game win.
In the championship, Wayne won a rematch with Calvary Brabec, taking an exciting 4-3 win.
Wayne trailed 3-1 in the fifth, but scored three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead and go on to win the championship. Nelson hit a three-run homer to center to account for the go-ahead blast, scoring Dobbins and Holz.
Holz had two hits in the win and McGuire doubled while throwing her fifth win of the weekend with five strikeouts.
In league action, Wayne split with West Point, taking the opener 10-7 and losing the nightcap 12-9.
In the first game, Wayne scored six runs in the fifth inning to pull away with the win.
McGuire and Dutcher doubled to lead a six-hit effort. Dutcher scored three times and McGuire scored twice, while Gubbels had two RBIs. McGuire got the win in relief of Dobbins.
In the nightcap, Wayne couldn’t get past a six-run first inning by the visitors, although they did out-hit West Point 8-5.
Dobbins tripled and scored a run, Gubbels had two hits, including an RBI double, and Alivia Kesting had two hits and three RBIs for Wayne. McGuire had two hits, two RBIS and two runs scored, Johnson scored twice and Gubbels had two hits and two runs. Johnson took the pitching loss.
The 14-under Devils are 20-15 on the season.
