The Wayne Dirt Devils 12-under softball team split a home doubleheader with the Tri-State Pride, winning the opener 6-5 and dropping the nightcap, 9-4.
In the first game, Wayne let a 4-1 lead get away and had to come back in the bottom of the sixth to get the walk-off win.
Wayne took a 4-1 lead in the first thanks to a two-run single by Taytum Sweetland and a fielding error by the Pride that allowed two more runs to score.
The Pride came back to tie the game at 4-4 and send the game to the international tiebreaker. The Pride scored a run in the top of the sixth, but Virginia Kniesche came home on a passed ball to tie the game and Hope O’Reilly scored on a single by Kendall Dorey to give the Dirt Devils the win.
Dorey had two of Wayne’s four hits on offense, while Sweetland had two RBI’s. Dorey struck out 11 and allowed one hit and four walks to get the win.
In the nightcap, the visitors scored five runs in the first and four in the second, and Wayne couldn’t keep pace as they fell to 9-4 on the season.
Brooklyn Kruse and Courtney Brink had hits for Wayne, while O’Reilly, Dorey, Hailey Schroeder and Brink scored runs. Brianna Nissen and Kruse combined in the circle.
The Dirt Devils 12-under team will play in the Golden Girls Invitational this weekend in Norfolk, starting with a 9:30 a.m. game Saturday against the Lady Cougars.
