Dirt Devil 14s, 10s Black both win twice; 10s Red to open state competition

With a trio of Dirt Devil softball teams preparing for weekend competition, two took part in doubleheader action June 27.

From the Summer Sports Complex, the Dirt Devil 14s welcomed in two West Point 14U teams ahead of a weekend tourney while Dirt Devil 10s Black closed out their season hosting Golden Girls 9U.

During the 14U games, the Dirt Devils (16-12) won 9-3 over West Point Yellow and 10-0 against West Point 14U.

In the opening game, West Point Yellow held a 3-2 lead after the first inning. Following a scoreless second, the Dirt Devil 14s posted a six-run third and added a run in the fourth to win 9-3. The Dirt Devils also won the hit department, 10-5.

Gracelynn Daniels and Kaylei McIntosh both singled twice, drove in a run and scored; Alivia Kesting doubled and drove in three runs while Kinnley McGuire doubled, drove in a run and scored twice.

Sidney Nelson singled, drove in a run and scored; Lilly Johnson singled and scored twice; Anna Dutcher singled and scored; Olivia Brandow singled; Elizabeth Hix accounted for a RBI as Sophie Gearhart scored.

McGuire (71 pitches) picked up the complete game victory in five innings allowing three runs (one earned) off five hits while striking out nine batters.

From the second outing, the Dirt Devil 14s started with a two-run first inning. The Dirt Devils posted a six-run third and added two more runs in the fourth to win 10-0 and outhit West Point 14U, 8-3.

Johnson singled twice, drove in two runs and scored; Anna Dutcher singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice; Kamden Dobbins doubled, drove in two runs and scored as Kesting doubled and drove in a run.

Daniels singled, drove in a run and scored; Brandow singled and scored; McIntosh scored twice as McGuire and Nelson both scored.

Johnson (50 pitches) picked up the complete game victory in four shutout innings allowing three hits while striking out two batters.

The Dirt Devil 14s were to open the Zoom in’ Thru June York Tournament on, June 29. 

Dirt Devil 10s Black (8-27) closed out their summer with two victories of 10-9 and 14-10 over Golden Girls 9U.

In the opening game, both teams scored five runs in the first and both teams scored two runs in the second to be tied at 7-7. Dirt Devil 10s Black used a 3-2 advantage as Meleah Larson scored the game-winning run in the third off a wild pitch. Dirt Devil 10s Black won 10-9 and outhit Golden Girls 9U, 7-3.

KayLee Nelson singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored twice; Larson singled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice as Lennox Smith singled twice and scored.

Caroline Endicott singled, drove in a run and scored twice as single runs came from Delilah Lueth, Isabella Lawyer and Bianca Hanson.

Brynlee Suhr (39 pitches) earned the win in an inning allowing two earned runs off one hit while striking out one batter and walking six. Smith (39) started the opening third of an inning allowing five earned runs off two hits while walking seven batters. Nelson (34) worked an inning allowing two earned runs while striking out one batter and walking six.

During the second outing, Dirt Devil 10s Black led 5-4 after the first inning and 10-5 following the second inning. Golden Girls 9U used a 5-4 advantage in the third. Final favored Dirt Devil 10s Black winning 14-10 and winning the hit department, 5-0.

Nelson and Suhr both singled, drove in a run and scored.

Charli Sears and Smith both singled and scored twice; Larson singled and scored; Lueth and Endicott both scored twice as single runs came from Bella Brandow, Bianca Hanson and Lawyer.

Suhr (73 pitches) picked up the win in two innings allowing five earned runs while striking out five batters, walking nine and hitting one. Larson (29) didn’t record an out allowing five earned runs while walking six batters and hitting two.

Dirt Devil 10s Black (8-27) joins the Dirt Devil 12s (13-12) ending their summer schedules.

The Dirt Devil 18s (10-8) will return to the diamond for the first time since June 15 when they competed in the Class B 18U State Tournament in Hastings. The Dirt Devils were to open the Zoom in’ Thru June York Tournament in the 18U-A Division with pool games starting on June 29

Dirt Devil 10s Red (37-3-1) will close out their season during the Class C 10U Nebraska Fastpitch State Tournament in Hastings. The Dirt Devils, who have won 17 straight and not lost since June 1, will await the winner of either St. Paul 10U or Prodigy Dodge 10U for a 6:30 p.m. Friday night outing.
