The Wayne Dirt Devils 18-under softball team cruised to a win in the opener and battled for a sweep of West Point in action Tuesday at the Summer Sports Complex, winning 11-0 and 7-5.
Wayne cranked out seven runs in the first inning to make quick work of their visitors in the opener. Eleven batters went to the plate in the inning, with Kennedy Maly stroking a two-run homer to highlight the big inning.
Maly, Jaime Gamble and Ashten Gibson each scored two runs in the win. Gibson allowed one hit and struck out six in three innings to get the win, while Courtney Boekemper worked a hitless fourth to finish off the game.
Wayne was down 3-0 in the second game when they came through with seven runs in the fourth inning to take the lead.
Sidney Biggerstaff got the rally started with a two-run double to center, scoring Danica Schaefer and Gibson. An error brought Biggerstaff home to tie the game at 3-3, and Wayne took the lead for good when another error brought Gamble home.
Abby Ankeny came through with the big hit of the game on the next pitch, taking the offering over the wall in center for a two-run blast. Kiara Hochstein singled and eventually scored on a steal of home to cap the seven-run inning.
Biggerstaff had two hits and two RBI’s to lead a seven-hit effort for the 13-1-1 Dirt Devils. Gibson got the win in relief while Boekemper picked up the save.
The Dirt Devils will play at Wisner on Thursday and are in the Golden Girls Invitational this weekend in Norfolk.
