Dirt Devil 18’s win Logan Valley League title

The Wayne Dirt Devils 18-under team claimed the tournament title Sunday in the Logan Valley League tournament held in Wisner, defeating Tekamah-Herman 11-3 in the championship game.

Wayne opened tournament play with a 14-2 win over Pender on Friday, jumping on their opponent for seven first-inning runs on their way to the easy win. Sidney Biggerstaff had two triples and drove in four runs, Kiara Hochstein had three hits and scored twice and Ashten Gibson and Allison Clausen each had two hits as part of a 13-hit attack. Gibson struck out seven and walked four to get the win.

On Saturday, Wayne had no problems with West Point in a 16-0 shutout, using an eight-run second inning to help them to the easy win. Kennedy Maly homered and drove in three runs, Gibson had two hits and four RBI’s, Jenna Trenhaile added two hits and three RBI’s, Biggerstaff had two hits and scored twice and Jamie Gamble drove in two runs. Gibson threw a two-hit shutout, striking out six.

On Sunday, Wayne strung together single runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings to advance to the championship with a 4-1 win over Tekamah-Herman. Wayne had 14 hits in the win, three coming from Danica Schaeer. Hochstein, Gibson, Trenhaile, Gamble and Clause each had two hits. Gibson struck out seven and allowed three hits to get the win.

In the championship game, Wayne gave up three runs early before responding by scoring 11 unanswered runs to claim the tourney title. Grace Lindsay had a two-run double and came around to score on a Tekamah error to tie the game in the second, and Wayne unleashed a six-run assault in the third to take control of the game.

Schaefer finished with three hits and Biggerstaff had three hits and an RBI to lead a 13-hit attack. Hochstein had two hits and two RBI’s and Trenhaile had a two-run double. Gibson fanned nine and allowed five hits in the win.

Wayne, 29-4-1, plays at North Bend Tuesday and closes the season at home with a triangular on Thursday.
