Early run production allows Crete to build early lead, Wayne falls to 19-11

Subdistrict championship softball concluded Monday evening for Wayne High.

Back at Crete High School, #2 Wayne faced #1 Crete in the B-6 Subdistrict Championship game.

Eight of the nine runs were scored by Crete in the opening two innings as final favored the host Cardinals winning 9-2. Crete improved to 23-8 while Blue Devils ended their season at 19-11.

Head Wayne High softball coach Rob Sweetland now has an all-time record of 601-143 for the Blue Devils.

Crete opened with a three-run first inning followed by five more runs in the second to lead 8-0. The Blue Devils answered with two runs in the top of the third trailing 8-2. Following a scoreless fourth, the Cardinals scored once more. Final favored Crete winning 9-2 and also winning the hit department, 10-5. Wayne committed two errors compared to one by Crete.

Nyla Bolles doubled and scored while Mackenzie Nissen singled twice and drove in  a run.

Sammi Gubbels singled and drove in a run as Kinnley McGuire singled and scored.

Sammi Gubbels (21 pitches) suffered the loss in an inning allowing three earned runs off four hits. Nissen (87) worked five innings allowing six runs (four earned) off six hits while striking out three batters and walking four.

Earlier in the day, Crete won 11-0 over #4 Raymond Central (10-21) as Wayne won 11-1 against #3 Lincoln Northwest (11-18).
