Entering the final weekend of regular season NSIC play, the Wayne State College softball team picked up an in-region opponent during the week.
From the Bearcat Softball Field in Maryville, Missouri, WSC visited Northwest Missouri State on Tuesday.
Two extra innings were needed for Wayne State College in a 5-1 victory followed by an 8-0 loss. With the split, WSC is now 29-20 (remain 13-10 NSIC) while the host Bearcats moved to 21-26 overall.
In the opening game, defense was key with seven consecutive scoreless innings.
In extras, Wayne State College used a run in the top of the eighth to go up 1-0 thanks to sophomore Jordyn Klein who scored off a wild pitch.
Northwest Missouri State answered a half of an inning later.
The rally then followed in the top of the ninth for WSC plating four runs. Sophomore Taylor Coleman doubled in both redshirt freshman Kennadi Borngrebe and sophomore Payton Kincaid followed by a two-run homerun from senior Lauren Laudick driving in Coleman.
Final in nine innings favored Wayne State College winning 5-1 despite being outhit, 9-7. The Wildcats committed three errors compared to two by the host Bearcats.
Lauren Laudick posted a two-run homerun; Taylor Coleman doubled, drove in two runs and scored as sophomore Jordyn Rochholz singled and doubled. Freshman Leah Chance also singled twice.
Redshirt senior Mary Krystofiak singled and also achieved her 1,000th career putout which ranks her sixth all-time in WSC history while Jordyn Klein, Payton Kincaid and Kennadi Borngrebe all scored.
Senior Samantha Felt (39 pitches) picked up the win in two innings of relief allowing one run off one hit while walking one batter. Senior Grace Lucka (90) worked seven scoreless innings starting the game allowing eight hits while striking out, walking and hitting one batter each.
During the second outing, it was all Northwest Missouri State who began by scoring two runs in the home half of the second inning.
Following a scoreless third, the Bearcats scored four runs in the home half of the fourth and closed the game with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Final favored Northwest Missouri State winning 8-0 in five innings while outhitting WSC, 10-3. Both teams committed three errors.
Kennadi Borngrebe, Taylor Coleman and Lauren Laudick all singled for WSC.
Borngrebe (87) suffered the loss in three and two-thirds allowing six runs (four earned) off eight hits while striking out one batter and walking three. Felt (27) worked an inning and two-thirds allowing two runs (one earned) off two hits.
The Wayne State College softball team will close out their regular season at NSIC opponents of Winona State and Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 – 27.
