'Face lift' continues at Greenwood Cemetery

Posted

Unless you have had reason to go to Greenwood Cemetery, you may not realize the face lift that has been taking place since mid-2022.

The Cemetery Association Trustees implemented a Capital Campaign to raise funds to take care of the much-needed repairs and upgrades. The community response has allowed them to implement and complete several of the identified projects.

To date there has been significant work completed:

•The front arch and gate have been removed, sand-blasted, powder coated and reinstalled.

•In 2022 there were 16 new trees planted and an additional eight trees were planted this spring

•The database management software is upgraded to take full advantage of all options in mapping and record keeping.

•The Chapel, built in 1938, has been completely renovated to create an office and space for meeting with families when necessary.

•Parking space and concrete replacement around the Chapel has been completed.

•In 2022 we were able to reseat, level and re-erect several historical monuments that had fallen in disrepair, they will continue this work biannually.

•In 2022 they were able to extend the water supply to cover more of the east boundary and the Veteran’s section, plans are to extend to the west area next.

•In 2023 they are expecting to replace some of the worst of the roadways – the goal is to replace 200 feet annually.

•The fencing extension/completion along Seventh Street will be delayed until the City of Wayne completes the sidewalk project.

•The research of above-ground burial options continues. This phase will take time to determine best design, best location and best purchasing options/supplier. The intention is to pre-sale each unit before installation.

"The Association is grateful for the community support and commitment in preserving the history and integrity of the cemetery," said Marta Nelson, member of the Association.

Greenwood Cemetery Association is hosting the Friday, May 26 Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m., followed by an Open House until 2 p.m.  The community is invited to attend the Open House.

The community is also encouraged to consider donations to the on-going Capital Campaign. As always, they remind that the Association members are available to assist with any pre-need grave space purchases.
