Families seem to be torn where to be during certain school sports and activities. Well, it was easy for those related to Grant and Grady Maas as well as Alexandria and Maddox Ziska marking a pair of Wayne High siblings to compete at the 2026 NSAA Girls and Boys State Wrestling Championships.
A gold medal was highlighted by Nyla Bolles (B140), who will be showcased next week, but the dates of Feb. 17-21 were about the last name of Maas and Ziska in several bouts.
State medalists were Grant Maas (boys B157, 2-3 state record) and Alexandria Ziska (girls B170, 3-3 state record) both in sixth during their respective podium appearances.
Grant Maas (39-8 this year) qualified for state three straight years recently earning sixth place medals this past season at 157lb and 150lb last year. He went 0-2 during his sophomore year at the 165lb division.
Grady Maas (B106) went 2-2 at state and finished this season at 36-11.
Grady also brought up his brothers' saying, "The end is written" and stated that 'things don't always go the way we want them to.'
Grant Maas will be pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering and is committed to wrestle at Briar Cliff during the 2026-27 school year.
For the Ziska's, the siblings also had a cousin who just competed in the Kansas High School state championships (third place at 190lb).
Juinor Maddox Ziska competed in his second state wrestling championships (285lb last year going 0-2).
This year he went 2-2 during the Class B 285lb bracket to finish at 21-16. During the regular season, Maddox placed at every meet he competed in besides two.
Freshman Alexandria Ziska qualified in her first-time as a varsity wrestler for the Blue Devils and also came away with a sixth place medal (first Wayne freshman to medal at state) in the Class B 170lb division.
She finished with a 49-14 record.
