One area high school wrestler from The Wayne Herald coverage area was in action on Feb. 21 during the final day of the 2026 NSAA Boys State Wrestling Championships.

Also, Wayne State College basketball, softball and baseball returned to competition.

Back at the CHI Health Center Arena in Omaha one final time, Wayne's Sr. Grant Maas (B157) suffered a loss by fall (2:55) in the consolation semifinal before ending his season with a sixth-place medal following a loss by major decision (10-1).

He ends his senior season at 39-8 and collects his second state medal following a sixth place finish at B150 last season.

From Rice Auditorium, the Wayne State College women's basketball team ended their season with a 58-46 loss while the Wildcat men snapped a five-game losing streak thanks to a 72-42 win over Southwest Minnesota State.

The WSC women dropped their final six to end the year at 10-18 (5-17 NSIC).

The Wildcat men (15-13, 11-11 NSIC) have earned the #9 seed and will visit #8 Sioux Falls on Feb. 25 to open the NSIC Tournament starting at 6 p.m.

Back in Washburn, KS for the Washburn Tournament, the Wayne State College softball team played one game due to weather and picked up their fourth straight win thanks to a 2-1 victory in 10 innings over Emporira State.

The Wildcats (8-1) will return to the diamond on Feb. 27 during the NSIC/MIAA Crossover in Shawnee, KS.

Back in Joplin, MO, the Wayne State College baseball team played a single nine-inning game and suffered an 11-5 loss to St. Cloud State.

The Wildcats closed out their four-game series thanks to a nine inning win on Feb. 22 of 13-4 against SCSU in non-conference play. Previous three games were NSIC games.

Wayne State College (6-5, 1-2 NSIC) is next scheduled to face Minnesota Duluth Feb. 27-March 1 with location TBD. Games are scheduled to be played in Omaha but could be relocated to northeast Nebraska.
