Four-run sixth sparks comeback win over Norfolk

Wayne/Wakefield took advantage of three Norfolk errors and got a key two-out bloop single by Tyler Lutt to spark a four-run sixth and post a 6-3 win over Norfolk in baseball action Friday at Hank Overin Field.

Norfolk scored all of its runs in the second inning, using three hits and two Wayne/Wakefield errors to plate their runs and take a 3-0 lead.

Wayne/Wakefield got a run in the third on Brennen O’Reilly’s suicide squeeze, scoring Tyler Lutt, then added another run in the fifth when O’Reilly’s sacrifice fly scored Tucker Nichols, who led off the inning with a long double to left.

In the sixth, Adam Bentjen reached on an error and Hagan Miller followed with a walk. Both were replaced by Kaleb Anderson and Josh Lutt, respectively, as courtesy runners. After Nichols reached on an error to load the bases, Tyler Lutt blooped a shot into short center field that Norfolk couldn’t reach, allowing Anderson and Josh Lutt to score. Nichols and Tyler Lutt then came home on the third Norfolk error of the inning to add two insurance runs.

That was enough for Bentjen, who threw the complete-game victory. striking out three and walking three while allowing four hits. Caden Korth and Tyler Lutt each had two hits to lead Wayne/Wakefield’s five-hit attack.

Wayne/Wakefield improved to 4-6 on the season with the win. They travel to Blair for an 11:30 a.m. game Saturday and are at Pender for a 4:30 p.m. matchup on Tuesday.
