Wayne State seniors Alyssa Frauendorfer and Michaela Mestl were named Northern Sun Conference Volleyball Players of the Week following their performances in Wildcat road wins over the weekend at Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State.
Frauendorfer was named Offensive Player of the Week for the first time this season while Mestl received Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time this season.
Frauendorfer, a 6-foot middle hitter, was named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week. She averaged 5.11 kills while hitting a sizzling .573 in two matches over the weekend. On Friday, she posted 16 kills while hitting .556 in a 3-1 win at Minnesota Crookston and followed that performance on Saturday with a career-high 30 kills with just two errors and a .583 attack percentage in a 3-2 comeback win at Bemidji State. For the weekend, Frauendorfer had 46 kills and just three attack errors on 75 attempts for a .573 attack percentage. The 30 kills against Bemidji State were the second most in a single match by a Wildcat player and tied for the third most kills in a single match by a player in the NSIC this season.
Mestl, a 5-foot-6 outside hitter, was named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week after she recorded 5.89 digs and 2.11 kills per set in the Wildcat road wins. She accounted for 21 digs and one service ace in Friday’s 3-1 win at Minnesota Crookston and added a season-high 32 digs with one service ace in Saturday’s 3-2 win at Bemidji State. For the season, Mestl averages 2.85 kills and 4.47 digs per set for the Wildcats. She ranks sixth in the NSIC in digs per set and is tied for fifth in service aces with 0.43 per set. Mestl has 159 career service aces and needs two more to become the all-time leader at Wayne State College.
Wayne State College, ranked eighth in the AVCA Div. II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, is 19-6 overall and 10-6 in the NSIC heading into this weekend’s road trip at Minot State Friday evening at 7 p.m. and the University of Mary Saturday at 4 p.m.
