Girls second, boys third at Blue Devil Invite

The Wayne High girls claimed runner-up honors while the Blue Devil boys settled for third in their home Blue Devil Invitational track and field meet Monday at Kern Stadium.

The Blue Devil girls finished just over 13 points behind winner Columbus Scotus in the seven-team meet and came away with eight first-place finishes on the day.

Kylie Hammer had a hand in four of the eight wins for Wayne, winning the long jump, triple jump and 200-meter dash while running the anchor leg to win the 1,600-meter relay with Kelsey Boyer, Kiara Hochstein and Gabi Meyer.

Hammer set a new meet and school record on her final attempt in the long jump, easily winning the event with a best mark of 18 feet, 5 inches. She also took the triple jump at 35-6 and won the 200-meter dash in :27.43.

Meyer and Boyer also added individual wins to their relay victory, with Meyer winning the 800-meter run and Boyer taking the 300-meter hurdles. Meyer’s finish was part of a 1-2-3 effort for Wayne, followed by Allison Echtenkamp and Kiara Hochstein.

Jenna Trenhaile set a new school record with her winning throw of 125-4 in the discus. The 3,200-meter relay team of Molly Hoskins, Frankie Klausen, Echtenkamp and Hochstein also claimed top honors on the day.

Other top-three finishes on the day included Andrea Torres taking third in the 1,600-meter run in 6:10.30, and the 400-meter relay of Kelsey Boyer, Ashton Boyer, Kennedy Maly and Katelyn Grone was third in 57.68.

In boys action, Wayne finished a solid third behind Scotus and Pierce, ending the day with three first-place efforts.

Christian Rogers won the 100-meter dash and was second in the 200, and Grayson McBride took top honors in the high jump and was second in the long jump to lead the Wayne effort. Nolan Reynolds won the pole vault and was joined by Aaron Reynolds, Ryan Jaixen and Tyler Pecena on the 1,600-meter relay team that finished second.

Other top-three finishes for Wayne included the freshman sprint medley taking first, and Cody Rogers was third in the triple jump.

Wakefield finished sixth in the girls race and tied for sixth in the boys race. Breanna Chase medaled in three events, highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the 100, and Jamie Dolph took third in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,600 to lead the Trojan girls. Solomon Peitz’s runner-up effort in the triple jump led the Trojan boys, while the 1,600-meter relay of Daniel Nuno, Ben Chase, Peitz and Esgar Godinez finished third.
