God's truth is more than a week at camp

Posted

Summer church camps are in full swing again. Vans are being packed, sleeping bags rolled up, and parents are double-checking whether their student remembered enough socks for the week.

For many kids and teenagers, camp is simply something they look forward to every summer — late nights in cabins, team competitions, campfire worship, and unforgettable memories with friends.

But for many believers, church camp has also become something much deeper. It becomes a place where God’s Word takes root in a fresh way.

There’s something powerful about stepping away from the constant noise of everyday life. Phones get put down. Schedules slow. Distractions fade. And in those moments, students often hear God’s truth more clearly than they have in a long time. Around campfires, in chapel services, or during quiet conversations with counselors, young people begin asking bigger questions about faith, purpose, and what it means to follow Jesus.

In Deuteronomy 6, Moses gives an important reminder to God’s people:

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might… And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.”

He goes on to say that God’s people should talk about His Word throughout everyday life — when sitting at home, walking along the road, lying down, and getting up. In other words, faith was never meant to be something reserved for a church service once a week. God’s truth was meant to shape every part of life.

That’s part of why church camp matters. It helps young people hide God’s Word in their hearts and see that following Jesus is not just about religion — it’s about surrendering every part of life to Him.

But maybe the bigger question is not whether camp impacts students. The bigger question is what happens after the campfires fade and everyone goes home.

Do we still keep God’s Word close to our hearts as adults? Do we still make time to listen, grow, and follow Him daily? Or have we allowed careers, stress, entertainment, and busy schedules to slowly crowd out the voice of God in our lives?

And beyond that, are we helping the next generation do the same?

Faith was never meant to stop with us. Scripture continually calls believers to teach, encourage, and train those coming behind them. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, teacher, coach, youth volunteer, or simply someone younger people are watching, your example matters more than you may realize.

Students need more than a week at camp. They need adults who genuinely love Jesus and live out their faith consistently back home.

So here’s the challenge: Are you simply hoping the next generation follows Jesus — or are you intentionally helping them see what it looks like to keep God’s Word close to their hearts every single day?
