In nine previous trips to the National Small College Rugby Organization semifinals, Wayne State has never lost on a chance at playing for a national title.
Make that 10-for-10.
The Wildcat women’s ruggers got out to a big lead in the first half and cruised to a 51-7 win over Minnesota Moorhead in the semifinals of the NSCRO 15’s tournament Saturday morning in Atlanta, Ga., putting them one win away from a ninth national title.
The Wildcats got on the board about 10 minutes into the game as Kennedy Jones scored the first of four tries. Selma Taylor kicked the conversion to make it 7-0.
Four minutes later, Gillian Herrera scored her first try and Cassie Pickerel scored a few minutes after that to make it 17-0. Jones scored two more tries later in the half to give the Wildcats a 36-7 halftime advantage and the rout was on.
Taylor scored a try of her own midway through the second half and Jones put in her fourth with 13 minutes to go, sending the undefeated (12-0) Wildcats into Sunday’s 12 p.m. championship match against either Salve Regina (R.I.) or Catholic University (D.C.).
Wayne State's only loss in an NSCRO championship came in the spring of 2017, when they lost to Colgate in the 7's title game.
