Hammer gets four firsts to highlight WSC Indoor effort

The Wayne High track and field teams kicked off the season indoors Saturday, competing in the Wayne State College Indoor Invitational.

Both teams fared well in the seven-team meet, with the girls taking first place and the boys finishing second behind Norfolk Catholic.

Kylie Hammer took first place in four events, setting a meet record in the long jump with a best effort of 18 feet, 8 inches. She also won the triple jump (35-8) and won two events on the track with firsts in the 55-meter dash (7.64) and 200-meter dash (27.94).

Andrea Torres and Sidney Biggerstaff also earned first-place efforts. Torres won the 3,200-meter run (13:17.90) while Biggerstaff won the 55-meter hurdles in 9.94 seconds, finishing one-hundredth of a second ahead at the finish line.

The 3,200-meter relay team of Torres, Frankie Klausen, Molly Hoskins and Gabi Meyer won their race in a time of 11:02.97; and Maysn Dorey led a 1-2 finish with Hailey Backer in the pole vault, clearing 8-6 to take first while Backer was second at 7-6.

Meyer finished second in the 800, the 640-meter relay of Backer, Dorey, Ashton Boyer and Sarah Greenwald took second, and Wayne had a 2-3-4 finish in the shot put as Emily Armstrong, Allison Claussen and Jenna Trenhaile placed second, third and fourth, respectively.

The Wayne High boys dominated the jumps with wins in three of the four jumping events.

Jack Evetovich placed first in the high jump while Cody Rogers finished third. Rogers and Lee led a 1-2 effort in the long jump, Rogers finished behind Alex Echtenkamp in the triple jump, and Echtenkamp was the runner-up in the pole vault.

Tyrus Eischeid placed third in the 800-meter dash, and the 1,600-meter relay team of Rogers, Evetovich, Aaron Reynolds and Koby Nelson finished third.

Wayne competes in the Columbus Scotus Relays on Tuesday, March 27.
