Hammer improves triple jump mark at Schuyler

SCHUYLER – Kylie Hammer added a foot to her school record in the triple jump and Wayne High won three events on their way to a runner-up finish in the Fred Arnold Invitational on Thursday.
Hammer finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 36 feet, 7 1/4 inches to improve on her school record. She also finished one inch behind teammate Tarah Stegemann in the long jump and was second in the 100 and third in the 200 to help the Blue Devils score 109 points and finish behind Columbus Scotus (128.03) in the eight-team meet.
Stegemann won two events on the day, winning the long jump at 16-7 1/2 and taking the high jump at 5-0, and also finished third in the 400-meter dash. Gabi Meyer also earned a first in the 800 with a time of 2:30.78.
Other medalists included Marcella Jurotich taking third in the 1,600 (5:58.72), Hannah Leonard was fifth (13:15.9) and Andrea Torres was sixth (13:31.3) in the 3,200, the 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams place third, the 3,200-meter relay team was fourth, and Danica Schaefer and Jenna Trenhaile were second in the shot put and discus, respectively.
In boys action, Grayson McBride was the lone champion for Wayne HIgh as the boys finished sixth in the eight-team meet. McBride won the event with a best effort of 6-3. He also finished third in the triple jump and was fourth in the long jump.
Other medalists included Christian Rogers placing sixth in the 100-meter dash, Tyler Pecena was fifth in both the 200 and 400, Nolan Reynolds was fourth in the 800, the 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams placed sixth and Will Anderson was fifth in the triple jump.
Some Wayne High athletes will compete in the Northeast Track and Field Classic next Thursday at Norfolk High School. The Blue Devils will compete next Saturday, April 30, in the Mid State Conference meet at O’Neill.
