Harmer recognized for military promotion


During this year's Old Settlers celebration in Winside, Joshua Harmer of Winside was presented with a hand burnt American flag plaque (created by Scorch-Wood, Zachary Morris) and sponsored by the 2024 Annual Gene Topp Memorial Car Show.

Harmer is part of the 28th Squadron Bomb Wing and is currently stationed at Elsworth Airforce Base in Rapid City, South Dakota.

He is the son of Kim and Dirk Jaeger and the late Jimmie Harmer.

Harmer joined the Air Force on Sept 13, 2005. He completed Basic Training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio Texas and Munitions Systems Tech School at Shepard AFB, Wichita Falls, Texas.

In January of 2006 he was stationed at Nellis AFB Las Vegas, where he worked as Munitions Accountability Tech.

In February of 2008 he was stationed at Kunsan Air Base South Korea and worked as Munitions Accountability Tech.

In March of 2009 he was stationed at Ellsworth AFB Rapid City South Dakota as an Equipment Maintenance Crew Member.

His deployments include:

July 2009 - deployed to Al Udeid Air Base Qatar for 6 months;

Jan 2012 - deployed to Al Udeid Air Base Qatar for 6 months;

Jan 2014 - deployed to Al Udeid Air Base Qatar for 5 months;

Jan 2019 - deployed to Ali Al Salem Kuwait  for 6 months.

Has worked as Equipment Maintenance Crew member, Equipment Maintenance Crew Chief, Munitions Controller, Munitions Inspector, Conventional Maintenance Crew Chief/Inspector, Line Delivery Supervisor, Weapon Safety Manager, Treaty Compliance Office Superintendent, multiple TDY's for specialized training.

Harmer was promoted to Master Sergeant in May 2024 and will sew on the Senior Non-Commissioned Officer Rank in August 2024.
