It was a wild Saturday for the Wayne High softball team as they played in three high-scoring games and went 2-1 during the Adams Central Invitational.
Playing without starting pitcher Tori Kniesche, the Blue Devils were involved in a trio of high-scoring affairs, beating Blue Hill 20-19, losing to Wilber-Clatonia 8-7 and blasting Milford 20-10.
In the first game, Wayne gave up 10 runs in the second inning to Blue Hill, but came back with 11 unanswered runs to take a 16-10 advantage. Blue Hill scored eight in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, but Wayne scored four in the bottom of the fifth, winning the game when Jenna Trenhaile’s single scored Allison Claussen and Masyn Dorey follower home when the left fielder misplayed the ball.
All 10 Wayne players who saw action got at least one hit, led by Dorey’s 4-for-5 effort with four runs scored and two RBI’s. Sidney Biggerstaff hit a pair of home runs and had three hits and four RBI’s. Trenhaile also homered and drove in three, Abby Ankeny had two hits and she and Kennedy Maly each drove in two. Jamie Gamble got the win in relief of Kayla Fleming.
Wilber broke a 7-7 tie with a run in the fifth and Wayne left the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning to end their 14-game winning streak.
Dorey had three hits and three runs scored while Trenhaile, Maly and Annie Kniesche each had two hits. Maly homered and drove in three. Fleming took the loss in relief of Gamble.
In the final game, Milford jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the third inning before Wayne’s offense unloaded an 18-run explosion on the Eagles, sending 22 batters to the plate in the inning. Thirteen of Wayne’s 14 hits came in the big inning, four of them home runs that included a back-to-back-to-back effort by Maly, Kniesche and Biggerstaff. Trenhaile also hit a two-run homer to cap the monster inning.
Everybody who got on base scored at least once for the 22-3 Blue Devils. Trenhaile scored four times, Dorey came home three times and Maly, Kniesche, Biggerstaff, Gamble, Ankeny and Josie Thompson all scored twice. Fleming also added a run. Maly had three hits and four RBI’s, Trenhaile had two hits and four RBI’s, while Dorey, Biggerstaff and Ankeny had two hits apiece. Fleming went the distance to earn her first career win.
The Blue Devils host Logan View on Tuesday at the Summer Sports Complex, while Guardian Angels Central Catholic comes calling for a Thursday matchup.
