The Wayne American Legion Juniors jumped on South Sioux City early and came away with an easy 11-2 win in their regular-season finale Wednesday at Hank Overin Field.
Wayne scored four in the first and five in the second to take control of the game early. Gunnar Jorgensen had an RBI double and Reid Korth and Blake Bartos had RBI singles to highlight the first-inning effort, and Korth and Tyler Gilliland both had RBI singles to highlight the five-run second inning.
Korth was 3-for-3 with three RBI’s to lead a 12-hit effort. Gilliland and Trevor DeBoer each had two hits, Brock Hopkins scored three times and DeBoer, Jorgensen and Josh Lutt each scored twice.
Four pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout, with DeBoer being credited with the win. Relief help came from Gilliland, Korth and Tyrus Eischeid.
Wayne takes a 14-11 record into Class B, Area 5 play this weekend in O’Neill. They open with a 4:30 p.m. game Friday against Columbus Lakeview. Double-elimination play continues through the championship game, scheduled for Monday at 5 p.m.
