A two-run homer by Annie Kniesche highlighted a seven-hit attack for the Wayne High softball team as they posted an 8-6 win over Columbus in action Thursday at Columbus.
The Blue Devils broke out to a 6-0 lead early in the game. In the second, Kortney Keller drew a bases-loaded walk and a Columbus error cleared the bases to make it 4-0. Kniesche slammed a shot over the wall in center field in the third inning to give Wayne a 6-0 advantage.
Columbus would come back with three in the third and three more in the fourth, but the Blue Devils prevailed with two in the sixth as Ashten Gibson scored on an error and Josie Thompson, pinch-running for Tori Kniesche, came home on a wild pitch.
Kennedy Maly had three of Wayne’s seven hits in the game, while Annie Kniesche was 2-for-4. Gibson got the win in relief of Hannah Belt, throwing 3 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.
Wayne is 16-3 on the season and is back in action Thursday with a home battle against Wisner-Pilger.
